AIM Tool & Die Cold-Fold Tester Machine
Procedure: ASTM-D 1912
Scope:
This machine evaluates cold-crack resistance on leather and vinyl
materials.
Machine Description:
The Cold Fold leather and vinyl tester is of aluminum construction
and available with 60-Hz 110-V or 50-Hz 220-V motors. The motor
drives two tangential knurled rollers by a chain and is detachable
to allow the entire tester to be chilled prior to use. The Cold-Fold
Tester meets ASTM, D 1912 specifications.
Test Description:
Prepare the test samples per the ASTM procedure. Testing
is conducted in a cold cabinet.
Test Procedure:
Prepare the samples per the ASTM procedure.
Remove the motor drive from the test machine and keep it at
room temperature. Place the machine and samples in the cold cabinet.
When the Cold-Fold Tester has been conditioned in the cold cabinet,
the motor can be reinstalled onto the machine by placing the
motor and plate sub-assembly onto 2 dowels on the top of the
machine while aligning the shaft couplings. Install and tighten
the 2 knobs after the motor is properly located.
Turn on the Cold-Fold Tester in the cabinet. Using either
a pair of tongs or asbestos gloves that have been conditioned
in the cold cabinet for 60 minutes, quickly put in the test samples
point first with stapled side up between the rollers, being careful
the temperature does not change in the immediate test area as
indicated by a thermometer. Keep the machine in the cold cabinet
during the testing but do not shut off the motor since it may
not restart due to the cold temperature. Upon completion, remove
the rack and test samples from the cabinet and examine the samples
for cracks. A failed sample displays a crack through the finish
to the leather or continuing through the leather. Record the
failing temperature. Tested samples, whether passed or failed,
should not be reused for any other test at any other temperature.
