AIM Tool & Die Flexibility Testing Machine
Procedure: ASTM-2097
Scope:
This machine evaluates leather and vinyl material flexibility.
Machine Description:
The Flex-O-Test leather testing machine is of aluminum construction
and available with a 60-Hz 110-V motor. It is designed to flex
approximately 525 strokes per minute using a timing belt drive
for accuracy. There is a timer included for starting the machine
before the lab opens and a counter for an accurate stroke count.
Ball bearing bushings and hardened steel shafts are used for
accuracy and durability. The Flex-O-Test has 10 stations with
1.5" diameter pistons and a stroke length of 1.25".
The overall machine size is 10" H x 11.5" W x 33"
L (70 lbs.) and meets all ASTM #2097 specifications. The following
options are also available for the Flex-O-Test: 14-station with
the size of 10" H x 11.5" W x 45" L (90 lbs.);
a Ford model with a stroke length of 0.50" and 1.0"
diameter pistons in either 10- or 14-station; any model with
a 50-Hz 220-V motor or a pre-determined automatic counter.
Test Description:
Test samples are 3"x 4.5" (76 x 114 mm) for the regular
model, or 2.5" x 3.125" for the Ford model.
Test Procedure:
Prepare the samples per the ASTM procedure.
Setup:
Measure the thickness of the test sample and multiply it by 15.
This is to be the shortest distance between the moving pistons
and can be easily measured and adjusted with a set of blocks
that come with the Flex-O-Test that ranges in size from 13-24
mm. Manually adjust the pulley to place half the pistons at the
minimum distance position, loosening the pistons with an Allen
wrench under the clamp to place them the correct minimum distance
with a measured block and tightening them up again when finished.
Repeat for the rest of the pistons. Clamp the test sample around
the two pistons without stretching it. Finish the first cycle
by turning the pulley and forcing the sample to flex by squeezing
the sides of the clamped sample with the thumb and middle finger
and forcing the center inward with the index finger while the
pistons are closed. Reset the count to zero.
Timer:
The timer used is an Intermatic all-weather time-all. The timer
can start the machine early in the morning so that a test can
be completed soon after the lab opens. The machine should be
shut off manually according to the counter to accurately control
the number of test cycles.
Pull up one tripper (red tabs around the outside of the dial)
for each half-hour of time between the desired hour marks you
want the Flex-O-Test to be activated. For example, if you want
the machine to run from 6:00 10:00 p.m., all 9 trippers
between 6 and 10 p.m. must be pulled up. After the trippers are
pulled up, turn the dial clockwise one or more complete revolutions
until the correct time of day is adjacent to the time of day
line (in line with the center of the on-off knob). Plug the Flex-O-Test
machine into the timer and plug the timer into the wall.
Automatic Counter (option):
The automatic counter replaces the timer, powering the machine
by a pre-set stroke count. When the stroke count has been reached,
the machine automatically turns off.
Set the counter to the final stroke count of the testing.
